Principal’s Message

Paul Dwyer, Principal

Dear Parents,

Congratulations to the 5 students who represented St. Joachim’s in the Division cross country competition at Hastings on Wednesday this week. Thank you and congratulations to; Sydney, Alisdair, Cooper, Lenny and Jacob, who all ran well and proudly represented our school.

Thank you to our school mums, Elisa B, and Maryann F, and our Parents and Friends Association, for organising a fabulous school disco for our students last night. The disco was well attended, with students in their fluoro colours, and the decorations and music made for a great night. Thank you to staff members who attended in support also.

Congratulations to our senior students who demonstrated their impressive skills and learnings, as part of our STEAM celebration day today. Thank you also to parents who visited. We appreciate your interest and support.

This Sunday is the feast of Pentecost, which is the birthday of the Church. To celebrate this as a school, we will be holding a whole school paraliturgy on Tuesday (11/6) in the hall at 10:30 a.m. We have ordered cupcakes for our students as part of the birthday celebrations. All parents are warmly invited to join us for the Pentecost liturgy and we look forward to Father Benneth giving us a final blessing.

As you know, next Monday (10/6) is a public holiday to celebrate the Queen’s Birthday. As such there will be no school on this day. School will resume on Tuesday (11/6) at the usual time.

Next Thursday (13/6) at our whole school assembly, the Principal of John Paul College, Mr. John Visentin, will present special Maths whiz badges to our 7 students involved in this numeracy extension and enhancement program.

Our evening PACH (Parents As Classroom Helpers) course also commences next Thursday (13/6) at 6:30 p.m. in the library, and runs for the next 3 weeks on Thursday evenings. Thank you to our Literacy leader, Mrs. Caroline Hume, who will run the course, and thankyou to the 10 parents who have registered to participate.

The sacrament of First Eucharist is approaching fast! My prayers and best wishes to the 32 students from St. Joachim’s School, who as part of St. Anne’s parish (with students from St. Anne’s School and other local schools), will make their First Eucharist on Sunday 16th June and Sunday 23rd June at 1:00 p.m. Mass at St. Anne’s Church.

Best wishes to our Senior students who will compete in the Winter lightning premiership competition on Monday 17th June. Football and soccer are at Baxter Oval and netball is at Jubilee Park, Karingal. Good luck to all students as they represent St. Joachim’s!

Some advance notice that our next School Advisory Board meeting (SAB) will be held on Thursday 20th June, commencing at 7:00 p.m. in the staffroom.

Please notify the school of any absences prior to 9:00am on the day of the absence. The easiest way to do this is via the FLEXIBUZZ App.

Unexplained Absences

Last year the Victorian Minister of Education has reviewed the Attendance Guidelines and accordingly schools must now notify parents/guardians of unexplained absences on the same day, as soon as practicable.

Some St Joachim’s parents may have received a phone call from our office staff to ask about unexplained absences.

It is now more important than ever that families notify us if your child is absent or will be late for school.

The easiest way to do this is by using the Flexibuzz App and using the ABSENCE tab. Alternatively parents can phone the school on 9785 2633.

We look forward to your co-operation in this very important matter.

Education in Faith

Zeeta Andrew - Religious Education Leader

This Sunday we celebrate the great feast of Pentecost ‘the birth of the Christian church’.

Pentecost enables us to recognize what is good, what is right, what is ethical, what is true and of lasting worth that guides us on our lives’ journey to God. It is the Holy Spirit that enables us to recognize and celebrate our connectedness to God and to one another.

As a school we will celebrate Pentecost on Tuesday the 11th June. We will have a liturgy at 10.30am in the school hall. We would like to invite all parents and the school community to join us in this celebration.

The following prayer is a way of reflecting on the meaning of Pentecost and its relevance for us here today:

Come, Holy Spirit of Pentecost Come, Holy Spirit of the Great South Land. O God, bless and unite all your people in Australia and guide us on the pilgrim way. Give us the grace to see your face in one another and to recognise Jesus, our companion on the road. Give us the courage to tell our stories and to speak boldly of your truth. Give us ears to listen humbly to each other and a discerning heart to hear what you are saying. Lead your Church into a hope-filled future, that we may live the joy of the Gospel. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, bread for the journey from age to age. Amen.

National Reconciliation Week

(NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The dates for NRW remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

CAFÉ Strategy: Predict What Will Happen

As adult readers we make predictions often without even realizing it. We do it when we watch movies, read a book, or hear someone tell us a story. It is a way of focusing our attention and motivating us to want to hear or read more. Children benefit from predicting in the same way. Therefore, it is important that we guide them to not only predict what will happen, but to also confirm their predictions.
