Paul Dwyer, Principal
Congratulations to our talented senior students on their excellent performance of our “Rockstarz” musical concert on Wednesday and Thursday evenings this week! The singing, dancing and acting was highly entertaining and showcased the extraordinary talents of our children. Thank you to all staff for their support, especially our creative Director/Producer, Jody Banks, and our Visual Director/Stage Manager, Helina Walker. Both Jody and Helina spent countless hours, additional to school time, to ensure all students had a fabulous opportunity to perform for our school community. My thanks also to the many parents who helped with costumes, make up, sets, props and as backstage crew. Another great St. Joachim’s event!
Individual student NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy And Numeracy) reports for our Year 3 and Year 5 students are expected to be delivered next week. These reports will be sent home to parents when I have them.
A reminder that next Thursday evening (5th September) our SAB (School Advisory Board) will be presented with an update of our school Master plan by our architects. I will keep you informed of developments.
Next Friday (6th September) our Preps are going on an excursion to Melbourne Zoo. I know they will enjoy a fabulous day of fun and learning. Fingers crossed for good weather!
Also next Friday our Middle school students will participate in a STEAM celebration, showcasing their learning and achievements in this important area. I hope to see lots of parents there.
Our Trivia night is only just over a week away (Saturday 7th September) I hope you have bought your tickets. It’s going to be a great night of fun and frivolity!
Next week I will send all St. Joachim’s families unique log in details to access the 2019 CEMSIS survey (Catholic Education Melbourne School Improvement Survey) to complete. Please note: This survey is in a new and different format from past parent surveys you may have completed. This survey seeks parent feedback about a number of issues regarding our school, including what’s working well and areas for improvement. As such, it is vital that we obtain parents’ views as part of our ongoing commitment to continuous school improvement. I strongly encourage every family to complete a survey! The surveys only take about 15 - 20 minutes and are completed online. The survey period runs between 2nd September and 20th September. Every family who completes a survey can get a raffle ticket from the office to go into a weekly draw for a $50 Bunnings voucher. Don’t miss out!
Happy Fathers’ Day for this Sunday to all our wonderful St. Joachim’s dads and granddads! Thank you for what you do for your families and our school. I hope your family spoils you and you get to spend some special time with them on the day.
Paul Dwyer, Principal
Please notify the school of any absences prior to 9:00am on the day of the absence. The easiest way to do this is via the FLEXIBUZZ App.
Last year the Victorian Minister of Education has reviewed the Attendance Guidelines and accordingly schools must now notify parents/guardians of unexplained absences on the same day, as soon as practicable.
Some St Joachim’s parents may have received a phone call from our office staff to ask about unexplained absences. It is now more important than ever that families notify us if your child is absent or will be late for school.
The easiest way to do this is by using the Flexibuzz App and using the ABSENCE tab.
We look forward to your co-operation in this very important matter.

Author of the Week
Following their excursion to Moonlit Sanctuary, the Year Two students have been researching and writing information reports about an Australian Animal. An information report provides readers with information on chosen a topic by providing them with facts. Generally an information report is written to provide facts about a living or non-living object. Information reports contain text features such as headings, subheadings and diagrams. Will has researched the Emu.

Creating confident learners
Creating confident learners builds a positive attitude to learning. It begins with children feeling loved, safe and supported. It incorporates a ‘growth mindset’; which emphasises that people aren’t born with a fixed amount of intelligence. Instead they can always take their abilities to the next level with perseverance and playfulness. It also helps children see mistakes as a guide for what needs to be learnt next.
In short, it swaps ‘I can’t’ with ‘I can’t YET’.
