Principal’s Message

Dear Parents,

Happy Easter and welcome back to Term 2! I hope all families enjoyed some extra time together over the school holidays.

Thank you to our Religious Education leader, Zeeta Andrews, for organising Easter meditations for our students. This is an important way for students to reflect on and understand the meaning and message of Easter more deeply.

Congratulations to our Grade 5 and 6 students who on Wednesday this week participated in volleyball, cricket and basketball competitions as part of the Lightning Premiership competition. Thank you to Reagon Haines who organised our participation and to our senior staff who officiated and supervised our students on the day.

Yesterday we celebrated ANZAC Day. This day is a solemn occasion when we remember and give thanks to all service personnel who served our country and sacrificed much to keep us safe. Thank you to Jody Banks and Donna Zammit and members of our liturgical choir, who attended and sang at the ANZAC Day ceremony at the Lyrebird Community Centre. Thank you also to Leonie Richardson and Deb McWaters, who accompanied two Year 4 students to the ANZAC Day ceremony at Seaford RSL to pay our respects to all members of our Defence force who have served and are serving our country.

St Joachim's was finely represented at the Seaford RSL's Children's ANZAC Day Service held on Wednesday. Well done to Kesean and Teresa.

My prayerful best wishes to our 24 Grade 3 students who, along with students from our sister school St. Anne’s and other students in the parish, will make their first Reconciliation at 7:00 p.m. next Tuesday evening (30th April) at St. Anne’s Church.

We are looking forward to our twilight sports, which will run next Wednesday afternoon from 4:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. here at school. All parents are warmly invited to join us to support our students. Thank you to our Parents and Friends who will sell snacks and drinks from the canteen from 3:30 p.m. until our starting time at 4:00 p.m. Fingers crossed for good weather! As this is a whole school event it is very important that all students are in attendance for our twilight sports.

Please be aware that the Woolworths Earn and Learn promotion starts next Wednesday (1st May) and runs through this term. This means that those families who shop at Woolworths will receive a sticker for every $10 they spend. Stickers can then be placed on a special sticker sheet and posted at school in our Woolworths Earn and Learn box or in the St. Joachim’s School Earn and Learn box at Woolworths in Carrum Downs.

A reminder that we are holding a working bee on Saturday 4th May from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Any assistance you could offer on this afternoon is much appreciated.

Paul Dwyer, Principal

Please notify the school of any absences prior to 9:00am on the day of the absence. The easiest way to do this is via the FLEXIBUZZ App.

Easter Guided Meditation

To celebrate the wonderful event of Jesus' resurrection, the children participated in a guided meditation that took them on a journey to the empty tomb. We used the symbol of the candle to remember that Jesus is alive and is with us. The children used their imagination to visualise the empty tomb and the symbols of a hollow Easter egg to remind them of presence of Jesus.

St Joachim's ANZAC Day Prayer Service

St Joachim's held our ANZAC Day Ceremony on Wednesday 24th April. We remember the courageous actions undertaken by the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps during the First World War.

We pray for the airmen, sailors and soldiers who died in battle, sacrificing their lives while on duty. We commemorate their bravery and pray for the families who lost loved ones. As we strive for peace in our country and world, help us to become instruments of your peace. We ask this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen

How to Empower Your Child to Deal With School Anxiety

This article written by Karen Young and found on the website is very informative and may assist some families in our community.

School anxiety is awful for children and heartwrenching for parents. It’s so common, but it doesn’t always look the same. Sometimes it will dress itself up as illness (headaches, tummy aches), sometimes as a tantrum or fierce defiance, and sometimes it looks exactly as you would expect.

Every Thursday at 2:30pm - Parents Welcome - A whole school assembly is held in the school hall every fortnight. Level assemblies are held on the other week.

Unexplained Absences

Last year the Victorian Minister of Education has reviewed the Attendance Guidelines and accordingly schools must now notify parents/guardians of unexplained absences on the same day, as soon as practicable.

Some St Joachim’s parents may have received a phone call from our office staff to ask about unexplained absences.

It is now more important than ever that families notify us if your child is absent or will be late for school.

The easiest way to do this is by using the Flexibuzz App and using the ABSENCE tab. Alternatively parents can phone the school on 9785 2633.

We look forward to your co-operation in this very important matter.

Preschool Story Time

Every Friday at 3:00pm in the STAFF ROOM there is “Story Time” for our pre-school friends. This story time is open to all of our siblings who are coming to Foundation / Prep at St Joachim’s next year.

Thank you to families who keep their CareMonkey profiles up to date such as when they change their address, phone number, parents work contact details etc. If you could also email the and let us know, we can adjust on our system as well.

This year all classes will be having specialised Digital Technologies lessons throughout the year. Term 2 will see the Middle school children having similar fun. Recently Rebecca Todisco, Digital Technologies Teacher and Leonie Richardson, Digital Technologies Manager, went along to the convention centre to hear all about the latest news in this exciting area of digital technologies.
